Challenge

Explaining, exciting, and elevating the Paralympic Sports to grow the fanbase.

We created an animated series to explain each of the 22 sports featured in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games program for broadcast, socials, and in-venue presentation. From the outside, many para sports may seem familiar to their Olympic counterparts, but they can have unique set of rules, adaptive equipment, or athlete classifications. Our goal was to explain the para sports in 90 seconds or less. We collaborated with 11 world-class artists to fuse the world of art and sport, mixing factual and human storytelling to give the series an overall vibrancy.

Our clients, the International Paralympic Committee, Allianz, and Paris 2024, hired us to take on this challenge because they believed that if more people understood how each para sport worked, more fans could appreciate the incredible athletic strength, endurance, and abilities required to compete at the Paralympic Games — thus getting even more excited to cheer the athletes on.

Making History and
Creating a Perfect Blend
of Art & Athleticism.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are set to make history. For the first time ever, all the Paralympic sports will be broadcast in over 160 countries. This is not just a milestone for disability sport, but also a significant step towards positively influencing the lives of 1.2 billion people living with disabilities.

Outcome

Reaching new fans, supporting the Paralympic Movement, and enriching viewer's experience with a touch of Parisian cultural elegance.

The 22 meticulously designed, illustrated and narrated videos highlight the unique set of rules and athletic classifications while also giving context to the various disciplines including in the Paralympic Movement.

A Team of Illustrators

We assembled a team of 11 illustrators based on character design styles after quickly realizing that we couldn't just hire illustrators and make them conform to a single style. In a project where diversity and inclusion are at its core, we knew we had to elevate unique styles while balancing the series's comprehensive, harmonious look. Therefore, we hired artists from around the globe with diverse cultural backgrounds and artistic expression.

Behind the Scenes

When Art meet Athletics

The branding of the Paris 2024 Games was based on French history and the Art Deco movement, which fused the worlds of sports and art. So, it felt appropriate to pay homage to the French masters by connecting them to our video series. Inspired by the idea of reinterpretating famous paintings with modern illustration styles, we wanted to recreate famous French masterpieces as Paralympic sports.

We carefully crafted a collection of critical, recognizable paintings and sculptures of art history by renowned French artists such as Monet, Manet, Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Rodin, who were key figures in the artistic movements leading up to Art Deco. We paired each paralympic discipline with a famous art piece, looking for details in the artwork that could form a connection to the sport.

The illustrators reinterpreted these classic scenes as Paralympic sports, resulting in a collection of inspiring and meaningful thumbnails for each video.
